It was in December, 1991 when Venu started its association with village Jatpura Mukhimpur in district Bulandsharh, 80 kms south east of Delhi. This was not a chance occurrence. Working in a district like Bulandsharh fitted well with Venu’s mandate of making eye care services available to the needy.

According to the 1991 census the population of Bulandsharh was 3.3 million, out of which 46% lived below the poverty line. Home to over 49,000 blind people, 84% of whom suffered from cataract. Mrs. Manjul Rana, whose family was zamindars of the villages around village Jatpura, approached Venu’s Founder, Late Dr. R.K.Seth, to provide eye care to the people of the area. Mrs. Rana’s family was already running a dispensary in the annex of their haveli (heritage house).

Initially Venu started a twice-a-week OPD clinic where patients were treated and those needing surgery were brought in a van to the Base Hospital in Delhi. As the backlog of patients, who were advised surgery, started increasing, the need was felt to establish an eye hospital. Land was donated by Mrs. Rana’s family and with financial assistance from Christoffel Blind Mission, Venu constructed a 30 bed Satellite Hospital in June 2000.
